Visitor Visa

A visitor visa, also referred to as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is an immigration document that allows foreign nationals to travel to and enter Canada. Unless you are from a visa-exempt country, you will need a visitor visa to enter Canada whether you are coming, as a student, as a temporary worker, as a tourist, for business purpose, for family visit or for compassionate reasons.

There are 2 types of visas: single-entry visa and multiple-entry visa.

Single Entry Visa: In most cases, you’ll need a new visa if you want to leave Canada and come back to Canada.

Multiple Entry Visa: You can leave and come back to Canada multiple times as long as your visitor visa has not expired.

How long you can stay

Visitor Visas are granted for a period of up to 10 years until the expiry of the passport. Most visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada.

At the port of entry, the border services officer may allow you to stay for less or more than 6 months. If so, they’ll put the date you need to leave by in your passport.

If you don’t get a stamp in your passport, you can stay for 6 months from the day you entered Canada or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

Visitor Visa for Workers and Students (TRV)

A work permit or study permit is not a visa. International Students and workers need a visitor visa to enter Canada which is valid until the expiry of study permit or work permit.

If you extend your study permit or work permit, you’ll need a new visitor visa, and you need to apply to TRV when your study permit or work permit extension is approved.
