Study Permit

The study permit is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows International students to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Most International students need a study permit to study in Canada. International students who study in Canada for six months or less, do not require a study permit. Depending on your case, there may be conditions on your study permit such as if you are allowed to work in Canada. Make sure you have all the documents you need before you apply. You should apply before you travel to Canada.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to apply for Study Pemit, you must

  • Be enrolled at DLI
  • Have enough funds to pay for tuition fees and living expenses
  • obey the law, have no criminal record
  • get a medical exam(if required)
  • prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires

How long can you stay in Canada with a Study Permit?

A study permit is usually valid for the length of your study program, plus an extra 90 days. The 90 days allows you to prepare to leave Canada or apply to extend your stay.

Changing School or Institution

You must notify IRCC when you are transferring from one Designated Learning Institution (DLI) to another, even if it is at the same level of study. You must make sure that the school you want to transfer to is on the DLI List.

Study Permit Extension

If you want to keep studying and stay in Canada, you need to extend your study permit before your current study permit expires.

Apply for a study permit extension at least 30 days before your study permit expires if you want to keep studying in Canada.

If your study permit expires and you want to stay in Canada and study, you’ll need to apply for a new study permit to restore your status as a temporary resident.
