Canadian Citizenship by Naturalization

The persons who are immigrants to Canada can acquire Canadian Citizenship through citizenship application process.

To be eligilble to become a Canadian Citizen, you must

  • Be a Permanent Resident
  • Have been in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) during the 5 years before the date you sign your Citizenship application.
  • Have filed taxes in Canada (if you need to) for at least 3 years during the 5 years right before the date you apply.
  • Show your language skills if you are between 18 and 54 years old on the day you sign your application.
  • Take the Citizenship test if you are between 18 and 54 years old on the day you sign your application.
  • Take the oath of citizenship if you are at least 14 years old when you sign your application, and the application is approved.

Once the application is approved and oath of citizenship is taken, you get the Citizenship Certificate.

A citizenship certificate is an official document that proves your Canadian citizenship. Citizenship certificate is used as a proof of Canadian citizenship to apply for Canadian passport.
